City of Lowell: If we don’t bill you, pay us anyway!

Robertson, Cheryl

I have to give new Treasurer Cheryl Robertson credit for being pro-active. Knowing that this administration has twice missed important dates regarding financial issues, she has sent out and Posted on the City Website a “Reminder”.

My favorite lines from this “reminder” are:

Excise taxes for the year are typically sent out mid-to-late February. These bills are due 30 days from issuance. If you have not received a bill by this time you should seek out your bill

Failure to receive a bill does not excuse interest or fees if the bill becomes past due.

A $30 Demand Fee will be added to past due excise bills per MGL CH. 60 sec 15, a fee which cannot be waived

How many times do you call your Electric, Cable, Credit Card company and say Hi, You haven’t billed me but is it okay if I send you money anyway? I don’t know what the bill is, but I’ll send something along. Here’s $10 how’s that?

Have they ever sent you a card telling you don’t forget, send us money if we forget to bill you?

Love the fact that she explains, Oh by the by, if we don’t send you the bill and you don’t send us all the money, it’s going to cost you a $30 Late Fee and we can’t wave that!

Remember, this is right after the City raised your taxes 3.5% (plus new valuation on your property).

Happy New Year!

Here’s the Posted Reminder.

Important Reminder Regarding Your Motor Vehicle Excise Tax

Excise taxes for the year are typically sent out mid-to-late February. These bills are due 30 days from issuance. If you have not received a bill by this time you should seek out your bill. In most cases the Collector’s Office can find your excise with the license plate #. Failure to receive a bill does not excuse interest or fees if the bill becomes past due.

If you receive an excise tax for a vehicle you no longer own you must pay the bill before it is due or you may file an abatement application with the Assessor’s Office. Excise taxes issued that are not paid or abated in full are subject to all additional interest and fees and cannot be waived. Filing an application of abatement does not freeze the collection of your excise.

A $30 Demand Fee will be added to past due excise bills per MGL CH. 60 sec 15, a fee which cannot be waived. If you have questions regarding payment of your excise please call the Treasurer/Collectors Office at 978-674-4222. Abatement related questions can be directed to the Assessor’s Office at 978-674-4200.
