Suffolk Street Bridge Closure Begins May 4th

After results from a recent inspection, Enel/Boott Hydro notified the City of a safety issue with the bridge located on Suffolk Street off Father Morissette Boulevard. The bridge will be closed beginning on Monday, May 4, 2015 to all vehicular traffic to make immediate structural repairs. City Engineer Lisa DeMeo met with Enel’s representative, and reviewing the inspection report, concurs with their decision.
A routine bridge inspection occurred less than a year ago on this span. At that time, several beams were identified as beginning to show section loss. An inspection on April 28 identified locations that deteriorated much faster than anticipated in the previous inspection report.
Items identified include:
• 100% section loss in several of the beam ends over the northerly pier and north abutment. The noted beams with this condition span across the full roadway width (this is why the full bridge is being closed).
• The westerly sidewalk also exhibits several beams with poor support . For this reason, the westerly sidewalk will be closed to pedestrian traffic. The Easterly sidewalk will remain open.
The length of time the bridge will be closed is yet undetermined. However, the goal is to expedite this project and limit the downtime of the bridge.
