In a story in today’s Sun titled Lowell school board grappling with space crunch it says

Facing a serious space crunch in fifth through seventh grades, Lowell school officials will need to figure out how to accommodate an oncoming increase in students.

School Committee members put a request for modular classrooms out to bid for the Wang Middle School, where the squeeze is the tightest.

But that bid came back with a cost of more than $500,000.

Is there really space crunch? There is plenty of room at the current Lowell High School Main buildings to move the Freshman Academy back into the main LHS buildings and use the existing Freshman Academy has a middle school.

For those that don’t recall the Clement G. McDonough Arts Magnet School was a middle school , my oldest son went there and it could be used again has a middle school.

You could in fact move the STEM School from the Rogers to the McDonough, use the Rogers for the overflow of middle school students if you needed to and possibly have room to bring in some special education programs.

My understanding from several people from the City (both School and City side) who took part in the Franco School tour is that the building isn’t handicapped accessible enough for the Lowell School Dept. and that you would have to pay a lot of money to renovate.

The desire to bring more special needs programs in-house is a good idea but unrealistic if you have to pay for modular classrooms. Use the existing McDonough school either for the overflow of middle school students (bring some administration to the building if you have extra space and lessen your rent payments) or move the STEM school and use the Rogers has a middle school and bring some special education programs in with them in a shared building.

I don’t really believe that there is a space crunch when you have so much under utilized space in the main High School that would easily accommodate the Freshman and free up an entire renovated usable McDonough building.
